I'm Dorcas Brown, and Hannah's Aid began with something I noticed. Modern medicine — and, more specifically, assisted reproductive technology — is helping more women conceive than ever, yet the mental and emotional well-being of women whilst trying to conceive is so often overlooked.
My mother's journey with reproductive health taught me compassion for women long before I knew why. She had my brother first, then battled secondary infertility before conceiving me. She then underwent surgery on her fallopian tubes, and after conceiving me she had large fibroids whilst pregnant, which meant that she went into labour spontaneously and gave birth to me prematurely at 34 weeks.
She retold the story to me — how she held on to her faith, and how it anchored her — and hearing it, I admired the strength and the ordeal she went through to conceive me. Rooted in the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel, everything we do rests on one belief: your tears are seen, and there is a seat waiting for you.
